Six Interstate Moving Tips

If you are planning to move across the country, 5 Star Moving and Storage is here to help you plan and prepare for your move.  The following six moving tips will help the process go as smoothly as possible.

With any large project, it’s important to break the task up into smaller pieces, so it doesn’t overwhelm you.

#1 Declutter and get rid of stuff

This may seem obvious, but it is essential to a successful move.  Take a good look at every room and see what hasn’t been used, anything that isn’t necessary or sentimental should go.  If your furniture is old and unsightly why move it?  Buy a new one after you move.  The same applies to linens, clothes, artwork, books or board games you haven’t played in years.

The more you pare down, the easier your move will be.  A move is a new beginning.  It’s a great time to start over with new items to help you start this new chapter in your life.

#2 Clean Items

When you are packing your boxes, wipe your items down and clean them.  It may seem like more work, but you will not have to unload dusty and dirty items when you reach your destination.

#3 Use Proper Packing Material

If you are moving across the country, your belongings will be subjected to bumps and twists and turns along the way.  To protect your items properly, it’s important to pack them carefully in sturdy boxes with a lot of padding. You will also need Sharpie Markers and strong tape.  Using plastic bins is a great idea because they are durable and waterproof.  They are also a great way to store your unwanted items in your new location.

#4 Inventory and Label Everything

No matter where you are moving, it’s important to keep an inventory list of every item, and its location.  The more complicated your move, the more likely your belongings can get lost.  If you start weeks ahead, you can keep a detailed inventory of each box.  Once you reach your destination, it will be easy for you to double check and make sure everything has arrived.

#5 Research and Pick a Mover

If you don’t have the time to pack up your things you can hire a moving company to do the work for you.  If your budget allows, this will take a lot of the stress out of doing this on your own.  There are a lot of perks to hiring a professional for your move.  They will do the heavy lifting, loading, and unloading when you reach your destination.  We recommend you get several free quotes and choose a company that is reputable and cost-effective.

#6 Carefully Plot Your Route

Getting lost is a real possibility, so it’s important to know exactly where you are going and what route is the most effective.  Even though you will rely on your GPS, it’s still important to map out your route before leaving.  If your move takes several days, you will need to check out hotels and make reservations well in advance.  It’s important you keep to your schedule so everything will proceed properly.
