Military Movers in Colorado Springs, CO

PPM (DITY) and PCS Moves From a DoD-Approved Local Mover. Free Estimates.

Colorado Springs is a military town, and PCS season is the busiest stretch of our year. Here is something a lot of families don’t realize: when the military arranges and pays for your move, it assigns the moving company for you. The time you get to choose your own mover is a Personally Procured Move (PPM), the program many people still call a DITY move.

That is where we come in. 5 Star Moving and Storage is a DoD-approved packing and shipping company that has served Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base and the Air Force Academy since 2007. On a PPM, you hire us, we do the heavy lifting and weigh your shipment on our own scale, and the military reimburses you for the move.

How a PPM (DITY) Move Works

With a PPM, you manage your own move instead of using a government-arranged mover. You can do the work yourself, rent a truck, or hire a professional moving company. Under a member-elected PPM, the government pays you 100 percent of what it would have cost to move you, called the Government Constructed Cost, and you keep whatever you don’t spend, minus taxes.

Hiring a mover takes the packing, lifting and driving off your plate while you still use the PPM. You pick the company, the dates and the level of service, and your Transportation Office can tell you what your reimbursement is likely to be before you commit.

When your orders take you out of Colorado, we handle the move through our partnership with Wheaton World Wide Moving, so your household goods can reach any state without being handed off to a broker you have never met. We also move the heavy and awkward pieces that come with a lot of military households, including gun safes and pianos.

Start With Your Transportation Office

Before you book anyone, get your PPM approved by your installation’s Transportation Office (TO). Reimbursement depends on that approval, and the TO will walk you through the paperwork your branch requires.

  • Get your orders and PPM approval from your TO first.
  • Get a written estimate from us to compare against your PPM estimate.
  • Tell us it is a PPM when you book. We have a scale on site at our Valley Street warehouse and provide the empty and full weight tickets your TO will ask for.
  • Keep every receipt and document from the move.
  • File your claim through your TO after you arrive.

If the military is arranging your move instead, it books the moving company through its own system. We can still help with storage between homes, or with the part you handle yourself under a partial PPM. Retiring, separating or moving off post on your own schedule? Call us directly and we will build the move around your dates.

Storage Between Assignments

Our storage warehouse is right here in Colorado Springs at 611 Valley Street. Military families use it for all kinds of gaps: housing that is not ready yet, a deployment, a temporary assignment, or a few months between homes. We offer both short and long term storage, and we can pick up from your current home and deliver to your next one when you are ready.

Protection for Your Belongings

For local moves, our optional Peace of Mind Protection Plan adds up to $1,000 in coverage for your home and belongings. Ask about it when you call, and our team will walk you through what it covers. Read about our coverage plan

What to Look For in a PPM Mover

Military OneSource warns service members about rogue movers who lowball a quote and then raise the price once your things are on the truck. A few checks protect you:

  • A mover registered with the federal government. Ours is US DOT 70719.
  • A written estimate, and knowing whether it is binding or non-binding before you sign.
  • No large cash or wire deposit before the move.
  • The actual moving company, not a broker reselling your move.
  • The right coverage for your household goods.

We will put your estimate in writing and walk you through it before you decide.

Bases and Communities We Serve

We move service members and their families at Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base and the U.S. Air Force Academy, along with the surrounding communities, including Fountain and Black Forest. If you are not sure whether we cover your move, give us a call.

Planning Your PCS Move

The busiest months of the year are May through August, when PCS season and summer moves overlap. The earlier you call once your orders and PPM approval are in hand, the more dates we can offer you. For a step-by-step checklist, read our guide on how to prepare for PCS season at Fort Carson.
